Using Your Out of Network Benefits
I no longer work with insurance companies because I have found that allowing insurance companies to dictate my practice generally results in our work being constrained by what insurance companies consider to be reimbursable. For example, insurance companies can and do tell me how long my sessions can be, what issues we can address, and the manner in which those issues can be explored. Further, insurance companies require us to provide them access to your records at their request and it is my firm belief that this has the potential to compromise the confidentiality of your mental health record.
Many clients choose to use their “out of network benefits” to pay for insurance and I can certainly provide the superbill that you would be required to submit in order to access those benefits. Please be aware that the superbill does include the mental health diagnosis for which you are being treated and if the insurance company wants to access your records, they are still entitled to do so, even with an out of network provider. Also, please be aware that I limit my involvement with insurance companies to providing a superbill to you. The reimbursement the insurance company ultimately provides after you submit the superbill is between you and your insurance company.
If you have an HRA/FSA/HSA account, I can accept those funds for payment. I would encourage you to verify your out of network benefits prior to starting therapy and to consider the above issues when using your out of network benefits. You can use this Verification of Insurance Benefits form to get the necessary information from your insurance company.
